Nick Weschler tells a story of helping the first black family move into the formerly all-white community of Levittown, Pennsylvania. Even though housing sales discrimination was technically illegal by a Supreme Court ruling in 1948, many developers and individuals refused to sell or rent housing to members of certain races, ethnic & religious groups until the Fair Housing Act (FHA) created enforcement methods. Martin Luther King and other "open housing" activists organized protests in the 1960s that led to minor local reforms. National compliance began with passage of the FHA in April 1968, the week after black rebellions in dozens of major cities.Blacks (Negroes) were most commonly denied equal opportunity, but Puerto Ricans also faced major discrimination in Chicago.
