In this Black Film Mini-Lecture, historian/archivist CHARLES WOODS talks about how images of Blacks changed in American Film as a result of World War II. While the NAACP had an influence, it was the lesser-known Office Of War Information (O.W.I.) that may have had greater impact in helping to erase the mammy and servant stereotypes. W. Kamau Bell is a socio-political comedian and the host of the CNN docu-series United Shades of America. Bell is best known for his critically-acclaimed FX comedy series, Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell which was executive produced by Chris Rock, who became a fan after seeing a performance of Kamau’s one man show, The W. Kamau Bell Curve: Ending Racism in About an Hour. Kamau is the ACLU’s Ambassador of Racial Justice and on the advisory board of Race Forward, a racial justice think tank, and Hollaback, a non-profit movement to end street harassment. The New York Times called Kamau “the most promising new talent in political comedy in many years.”

Conversations in Black Freedom Studies: The Struggle Against Racism and Repression | The New York Public Library: This month’s program marks 50 years since Stokely Carmichael galvanized the Black Power generation in June 1966; and it suggests the long road to the Black Power era with three presentations. First, Caleb Smith traces the contours of white domination back to perhaps the first African-American prison narrative from the 1800s in Jim Crow New York. Second, Aldon Morris traces the birth of modern sociology back to W.E.B. Du Bois and the Atlanta School. Third, Aram Goudsouzian traces the dawn of the Black Power era back to the 1966 Meredith March Against Fear. Presented by Schomburg Education.
