Episode | African American Registry

Date:
Tue, 1866-05-01
*The Memphis riot occurred on this date in 1866. It was a race riot that lasted for three days and resulted in the deaths of forty-six Blacks and two Whites. A Joint Congressional Committee reported seventy-five persons injured, one hundred persons robbed, five women raped, ninety-one homes burned, four churches and eight schools burned and destroyed, and seventeen thousand dollars in federal property destroyed. Hundreds of Blacks were jailed, and almost all other freedmen fled town until the disturbance ended.
For the next two days, White mobs, which included policemen, firemen, and some businessmen, attacked the freedmen's camps and neighborhoods. The riot started after a rumor went out that Black soldiers from Fort Pickering, on the south boundary of downtown Memphis, had killed several policemen who tried to arrest a black soldier. In response to the reports, Union General George Stoneman disarmed the soldiers and locked them in their barracks, leaving nearby freedmen's settlements vulnerable to the white mobs that soon attacked women, children, and defenseless men, as well as the northern missionaries who served as ministers and teachers for the freedmen.
The Memphis riots reflected the anger and frustration felt by many White citizens and particularly former Confederates, who had suffered the agony of a bitter defeat at the hands of a Black and White Union army. Irish immigrants, who had sided with the Confederacy, especially hated the freedmen who dominated the skilled and unskilled jobs that had previously served as a mechanism for upward mobility in the Irish community. Some downtown businessmen participated in the mob because they resented the many penniless freedmen on the streets. Other rioters wanted revenge for the Union occupation. The use of Black soldiers as patrolmen with power to order Whites to "move on" was especially infuriating to many. Finally, the riots reflected the attitudes of most White citizens toward the former slaves who were then free and soon demanding equal rights.
One outcome of the Memphis riot (and a similar riot in New Orleans) was the congressional move toward Radical Reconstruction. The Radical Republicans passed a Civil Rights Bill and the Fourteenth Amendment, guaranteeing citizenship, equal protection of the laws, and due process to former slaves. Tennessee was forced to ratify the Fourteenth Amendment before being allowed to return to the Union later that year. Ironically, the former slaves became citizens, voters, and officeholders in part due to the Reconstruction acts passed in response to the race riots in Memphis and elsewhere.

Earlier this year, I logged 174 interview requests about film diversity in one day. That day happened to be the day of the Oscar nominations. A flurry of outlets wanted my "reaction." Requests came from all over the world. I wondered where all those folks had been all this time. It was suddenly a hot button issue. Black actors. Black filmmakers. Inclusion. Diversity. Bottom line? These issues weren't new. But it took something folks perceived as dramatic to get attention. As a society, we do that a lot. But, we've been here. Doing the work. Eight films by filmmakers of color released by our own hands since we launched AFFRM. Because the stories we tell each other matter. All the time. The images we consume matter. All the time. What we support and don't support matters. All the time. Please watch this homemade video about our efforts and consider standing with us at www.arrayaction.com. Thanks sincerely. Thurmond’s daughter: Sharpton ‘overreacted’

Thurmond, of South Carolina, was once considered an icon of racial segregation. During his 1948 bid for president, he promised to preserve segregation. In 1957, he filibustered for more than 24 hours against a civil rights bill.
Sharpton, who ran for president in 2004 on a ticket of racial justice, said he met Thurmond in 1991 with the late soul singer James Brown, who knew Thurmond. Sharpton said the meeting was “awkward.”
“I was not happy to meet him because what he had done all his life,” Sharpton said.

Media Black Out in NYC

#BlackLivesMatter

At sister station WLIB (1190 AM), Imhotep Gary Byrd’s Sunday night talk-and-information show, “GBE Mindflight,” had its last show on Easter Sunday.
Byrd’s “Express Yourself,” 7-9 p.m. Sundays, is now simulcast on WBLS and WLIB.
WBLS and WLIB program director Skip Dillard said cancelling “Mindflight” lets WLIB use its 9 p.m.-midnight slot for gospel music, the station’s primary format.
Black community spokespersons have expressed concern for several years, particularly since the disappearance of WRKS (98.7 FM, Kiss-FM), about the shrinking number of radio forums for black community issues.
Byrd said it is a problem.
“The loss of the WLIB airtime and the overload of issues for our community means that I have to do even more with less,” he said. “But isn’t that a familiar situation for us as a people and community?”
He said he is “frankly disappointed about the cancellation of the ‘GBE Mind Flight’ show,” though he added, “I am thankful for the opportunity provided by WLIB management over the years.”
He said he is optimistic that “GBE Mind Flight” will fly again.”

'A Ballerina's Tale' explores the rise of Misty Copeland

The powerful footage of her dancing with a voice over telling her she doesn't have the right body to be a dancer is the kind of kick-in-the-guts stuff that guarantees a video will go viral - which it rightly has.

Copeland began ballet at the relatively late age of 13, but nonetheless has risen to the top of her field. In 2007, according to her official site, Copeland became the first African-American woman to be named as a soloist in the ultra-prestigious American Ballet Theatre in 20 years. And she accomplished all this after a tumultuous childhood that included poverty and family disfunction to thrive in a sport where minorities are few and most girls start to train in preschool.

That hardly scratches the surface of Copeland's story of ballet badassery — but check out the one-minute spot above for your dose of Monday inspiration.

Mayor requests Justice Dept. launches additional civil rights investigation - WBFF Fox Baltimore - Top Stories

Updated: Wed, May 06 2015, 07:30 PM Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake asked the Justice Department to launch another civil rights investigation on Wednesday. This one would center around the Baltimore Police Department.  Last week, U.S. Congressman Elijah Cummings made a similar request.  Two federal probes are currently pending.  Last October, the Mayor asked the Justice Department to conduct a review of the Baltimore Police Department.  Just last month, following the death of Freddie Gray, the Department of Justice announced it would be reviewing the force.  This investigation proposed by the Mayor would look into whether city officers have been engaged in stops, searches or arrests patterns that violate the Fourth Amendment.
