Black Suffering is no Joke

I'm not sure why comedian Steve Harvey would say "I don't give a damn about slavery." I saw the clip and my jaws dropped to the floor, as Steve, in the midst of comic relief for a white woman on the street, felt compelled to make one of the most hurtful and disappointing remarks that any black man could ever make during Black History Month.

Personally, I want to believe that Steve would take those remarks back if he could. I also want to believe that he will apologize for what he said. But something tells me that Steve didn't become America's favorite black man by apologizing to the black community for anything he might have said to offend us.

My thoughts on this topic are pretty simple. First, black men should never endorse ignorance as a way to avoid uncomfortable conversations. One of the ways blacks are kept under the grip of oppression is by keeping us ignorant and disinterested in knowing our history. Secondly, black celebrities must be held accountable for the things they say and do, no matter who they are. Many (actually most) of them are propped up by the white power structure, and there are many cases in which their messages are used to keep black people under control.
