Robert Jensen The Color of the Race Problem Is White"

Published on Jul 1, 2009

In The Souls of Black Folk, W.E.B. DuBois suggested that the question white people so often want to ask black people is,

How does it feel to be a problem? This program turns the tables and recognizes some simple facts: Race problems have their roots in a system of white supremacy.

White people invented white supremacy. Therefore, the color of the race problem is white. White people are the problem. White people have to ask ourselves: How does it feel to be a problem?

Following the ideas in his book The Heart of Whiteness, Jensen argues that -- even decades after the

significant achievements of the civil-rights movement and with an African-American president -

- it is still appropriate to describe the United States as a white-supremacist society, in terms of how we think and how we live.

Through an analysis of contemporary racial ideology, Jensen presents a framework for critiquing

the naturalizing of power and privilege in other arenas of our lives (gender, class, nationality, and ecology).

How have we come to accept so easily systems of domination and subordination? How did we become resigned to hierarchy?

How can we challenge the unjust and unsustainable nature of the systems in which we live?

Chris Hayes discusses his book, A Colony in a Nation

Emmy Award–winning MSNBC news anchor Chris Hayes, author of the New York Times bestselling book 'Twilight of the Elites' came to Boston for a panel discussion on inequality in America. He was joined at the Old South Church by Emerson College's Jabari Asim and Suffolk University Law School's Frank Rudy Cooper. Anthony Brooks moderated the conversation.

In his latest book, 'A Colony in a Nation', Hayes argues that there are really two Americas: a colony and a nation. America likes to tell itself that it inhabits a postracial world, yet nearly every empirical measure—wealth, unemployment, incarceration, school segregation—reveals that racial inequality has barely improved since 1968, when Richard Nixon became our first “law and order” president.

Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk of Rage Against The Machine, Chuck D and DJ Lord of Public Enemy and B-Real of Cypress Hill have lived the resistance from day one. So it’s no surprise that in the midst of 2016’s tumultuous election, the revolutionary musicians would join together as Prophets of Rage to combat the coming storm, whatever it may be.
While the fierce independence and enduring influence of their collective lineage is nearly impossible to overstate, these creative kindred spirits knew immediately this was a different beast. Set for release in September of 2017, Prophets of Rage, their explosive, self-titled debut LP, exemplifies the band’s commitment to creating a more decent and humane world.https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=35&v=PzAvPcM7Vw0
