On June 11, 1962 Alabama Governor George Wallace attempted to block a federal court order to admit to black students to the University of Alabama. Wallace stood in the doorway and kept his promise to Alabamians to block integration of the university himself. Kennedy later federalized the Alabama National Guard and forcefully allowed the students to be admitted.
